Our commitment
Many of the Veterans who visit this site live with service-connected vision, hearing, hand or cognitive conditions, or with traumatic brain injury (TBI). We design with that in mind, not as an afterthought.
Our goal is to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, Level AA. For body text, we aim higher and target the Level AAA contrast ratio, so that text is easier to read.
What we have done
Here are some of the steps we have taken:
- Clear page structure. We use semantic HTML, with real headings, lists, landmarks and buttons, so screen readers and other assistive tools can understand each page.
- Keyboard access. You can reach and use every link, button and form field with a keyboard alone.
- Visible focus. A clear focus ring shows where you are on the page when you move with the keyboard.
- Skip link. A "Skip to main content" link lets you jump past the menu.
- Reduced motion. If your device is set to reduce motion, we turn off or tone down animation.
- Larger touch targets. Buttons and links are at least 44 by 44 pixels, which helps if you have tremors or limited hand movement.
- Labeled forms. Every form field has a visible label. If something needs fixing, we explain the problem in writing, not by color alone.
- No autoplay. Nothing on the site plays sound or video on its own.
- Readable text. Body text is 18 pixels by default.
Known limitations
We are still working on some parts of the site. Known issues include:
- Logo. Our logo is currently a raster (pixel-based) image. It may look blurry when zoomed in a lot. A vector version that stays sharp at any size is pending.
- Photography. Final photos are not yet on the site. Some images may be placeholders until they are replaced. Each final photo will have a text description where it adds meaning.
- Links to other websites. We link to outside sites, such as VA.gov. We cannot control how accessible those sites are.
Report a barrier or ask for another format
If you have trouble using any part of this site, or you need information in another format, please tell us. Let us know the page, what you were trying to do, and the best way to reach you. We will work with you to get you the information in a way that works for you, such as large print, plain text, or reading it to you over the phone.
